They Will Kill You Movie Review: Is It Worth Watching?
Let’s be honest right away. If you hear that They Will Kill You plays like Sam Raimi remade Kill Bill, you will get very excited. But that excitement needs to be dialled down a little. It also feels like the director of Drag Me to Hell got to make a third Grindhouse film. Even though that comparison is fair, lower your hopes just a bit. It is a fun movie at times. However, it runs out of steam well before it ends.
The film lacks personality. It also lacks real stakes. Star Zazie Beetz gives everything she has. Some of the gore is truly wild and creative. But sadly, They Will Kill You becomes boring and repetitive. The parts between the action scenes are too thin. So comparing it to the classics that inspired it feels like too much.
Who Is Asia Reaves, and What Is the Story?
Zazie Beetz plays Asia Reaves. That is a very Tarantino-style name. It even gets its own splash screen during a chapter break. Asia answers a help-wanted ad. The job is at a mysterious New York hotel called The Virgil. This place has a dark history. People have gone missing there since the early 1900s. The front door has locks on the inside. Devil imagery covers the entrance. Clearly, something is very wrong here. Still, Asia has no idea how deep the secrets go. She does not know what the residents truly are.
The Virgil Hotel: A Demonic Place Full of Secrets
The Virgil is no ordinary hotel. It is a demonic palace. Therefore, the danger starts almost immediately for Asia. On her very first night, she meets the building manager, Lilith. Patricia Arquette plays Lilith. She takes Asia to her room. But Asia cannot even settle in before trouble finds her. Four people in pig masks attack her. Among them are villains played by Heather Graham and Tom Felton. They are leaders of the building’s Satanic cult. If this sounds familiar, you are right. It feels a lot like Ready or Not. However, there is one big twist here. That twist changes everything.
The Big Twist That Sets This Film Apart
After a thrilling first battle, Asia defeats her four attackers. They end up in literal pieces. But then something shocking happens. She watches them reform. They grow back like lizards regrowing their tails. This is the twist. The devil’s deal made by the residents of The Virgil has made them immortal. Nothing can truly kill them. As a result, director Kirill Sokolov goes completely wild with the action. Body parts fly everywhere.
The gore is extreme and over the top. However, this twist also kills the film’s stakes. Nothing feels dangerous anymore. Nothing feels like it truly matters. Because of that, the action starts to feel numb after a while. It feels more like a video game than a real film. Comic books were clearly a big influence too. Some shots look like panels from a gory graphic novel.
Too Many Influences, Not Enough Identity
Comic books. Video games. Tarantino. Raimi. They Will Kill You borrows from all of them. Moreover, it borrows so heavily that it loses its own voice. It starts to feel like an unholy mix of too many things. There is no real personality holding it together. That said, the chaos can still be fun. But there is one main reason for that. It is not the wild gore or the crazy visuals. The real reason is Zazie Beetz herself.
She is fearless in this role. Furthermore, she is completely committed to every scene. Whether she is beheading someone in her underwear or setting an axe on fire just for extra flair, she owns every moment. She is a fantastic action hero. On top of that, she carries real emotion in the role. Her character wants to save her sister, Maria, played by Myah’la, who lives inside The Virgil. That gives Asia a genuine reason to fight. Beetz has always been one of the most interesting actresses of her generation. This film proves she could lead her own franchise.
Does the Film Work as a Theatrical Experience?
The short answer is yes, but only in the right setting. They Will Kill You was an SXSW film. It is getting a wide release through New Line and Warner Bros. That is a bold choice. However, it makes some sense. This is the kind of film that works much better with a loud, cheering crowd around you. In a packed theatre, the energy lifts it.
At home, on a streaming service, it feels much shallower. The character work is thin. The themes are weak. The plotting is basic. Furthermore, the film relies too much on violence and gore to keep the audience engaged. It is like a very loud yell in a film. It tries to overwhelm you with action so you do not notice the flaws.

They Will Kill You is not a bad film. Nevertheless, it is not a great one either. It has real highlights. Zazie Beetz is brilliant. Some of the gore sequences are genuinely creative. The premise is fun and wild. However, the film is too repetitive. The stakes feel too low because of the immortality angle.
The influences are too obvious. Additionally, the film never quite finds its own identity. It wants to be Kill Bill. It wants to be Drag Me to Hell. But it ends up being a lesser version of both. Watch it if you love wild, gory, action-heavy films. Just do not go in expecting a classic. It is a good time. But it is not a great film.
